BPEP of Pittsburgh urges FCC to fill void left by WAMO

Tim Stevens, chairman of the Black Political Empowerment Project, has released an "open letter" to the Federal Communications Commission noting the end of WAMO as a radio voice for Pittsburgh's black community and asking "all appropriate bodies" to support the creation of one or more "Afro-centric" radio stations in the greater Pittsburgh market.

WAMO-FM, the city's only urban radio format, was sold earlier this year by Sheridan Broadcasting, along with two other Sheridan stations, WAMO-AM and WPGR-AM. The buyer is St. Joseph Missions, which plans to use them for Catholic religious programming.

Back in June, some Pittsburgh radio listeners basically had a lackluster attitude towards the impending sale of WAMO.
