Radio One Detroit Moves Hot 102.7, Makes Room for Gospel on FM
Popular WGPR radio host and Pistons P.A. Announcer John "DEE-TROIT Basket-BALL" Mason is out as Radio One does the Radio Shuffle in Detroit
Radio One, Inc.'s Detroit market has entered into a Local Marketing Agreement (LMA) to assume operating responsibility for WGPR FM 107.5. Radio One Detroit will be moving its HOT Hip Hop and R&B station 102.7 to its new home on 107.5 effective Monday, October 24, 2011 at 12:01am. (UPDATE: The big change will take place this Wednesday, October 26 instead)
The current line-up of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show 6am – 10am, Paigion in midday's 10am – 2pm, Big Greg afternoons 2pm – 7pm and Shorty da Prince evenings 7pm – 12 midnight will stay the same. The station will be on a full city grade non- directional FM signal, which will give HOT 107.5 one of the best FM signals in the Detroit metropolitan area.
Radio One Detroit will also bring a brand new station into the Detroit market on 102.7. A recent research project showed a substantial demand for inspirational music. Radio One already operates several very successful Praise stations around the country and has decided it is the right time to launch one in Detroit. Praise 102.7 will debut Monday, October 31, 2011. Inspirational super star Yolanda Adams will host morning drive from 6am – 10am. The Praise website will be www.praise1027.com.
"Adding WGPR to our existing portfolio of stations and introducing a brand new inspirational station means Radio One will become the dominant urban provider in the marketplace," stated Vice President and General Manager Kathy Stinehour. "We are looking forward to better serving the community and are thrilled Ms. Cathy Hughes and Alfred Liggins are choosing to make this type of major investment in Detroit."
WGPR's President and General Manager James Dogan commented, "While this was a very tough decision for us, it is the right thing to do for urban radio in our city. WGPR will perform better as part of the critical mass Radio One delivers."
As for the future of John Mason, a Radio One representative said the company "intends to explore other options with Mason." Radio One's Urban AC station in Detroit Kiss 105.9 (WDMK-FM) will remain the same and will not be effected by the change.

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. It will be great to have gospel on FM. The provided link for praise 102.7 (www.praise1027.com) is the wrong link. It takes you to a website which says "God wants you to AMP" and then redirects the user to the AMP98.7 website.
ReplyDeleteRadio One did provide an incorrect link in their press release. After doing some research the correct link is http://praise1027detroit.com/
ReplyDeletePraises be to God! We needed this and thank you Cathy Hughes and Yolanda Adams!! Its about time Gods soldiers are making a way for us to here his Praises! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! Rosalind Detroit, MI
ReplyDeleteI think its horrible to change what has been a Detroit trademark & tradition for so many years. I loved the mixture of old school, jazz and even new school music that 107.5 provided. 105.9 just dosen't come close! Now i'm stuck with a bunch of hip hop garbage. That music is what's corrupting our youth anyway. The other day I tuned into 107.5 to listen to some smooth R & B but instead I got a rapper rapping about a females body! 1st WJZZ now WGPR! Does anyone care about adult listeners anymore!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear about praise 102.7 on the radio.
ReplyDeleteThank God for praise 102.7!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the station, but please play the songs through to the end and not cut them off!
