Doc Walker Cut Loose by The Team 980 WTEM Ahead of the Station's Merge with Entercom's 106.7 The Fan WJFK

Rick ‘Doc’ Walker, the Washington Football Team's radio broadcast sideline reporter and 9am-12pm radio host on 980 The Team has exited the station. He will continue as sideline reporter during the radio broadcasts. WTEM's day to day operations will be taken over by Entercom as of next week and will no longer be owned by Urban One/Radio One in a deal that will be finalized in 2021. 

Walker played tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington team in the NFL before becoming a popular TV and radio host in the DMV. He had been with WTEM for 27 years. Walker was also the co-host on the late John Thompson Show, the former Hall of Fame basketball coach at Georgetown University, on 980 AM.

Also exiting the station was Scott Linn and program director Chris Johnson. Linn had been with WTEM since 1997 and most recently was a co-host on the Brian Mitchell Show and the Steve Czaben Show.

This month Entercom and Urban One made a swap of six stations in D.C., Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Charlotte. The move saw Entercom become the new owners of Team 980. They are already owners of sports station 106.7 The Fan WJFK. Entercom plans to air the content of The Team 980 and 106.7 The Fan independent of each other, as if they are not owned by the same company, for the foreseeable future.

Entercom ownership of multiple sports stations in the same city is not unprecedented. They also own more than one sports stations in San Francisco, Houston, Miami among others as well.

Doc Walker recently appeared with Radio One's Deja Perez and Aladdin Da Prince to talk the Washington Football Team's prospects for the rest of the season.
