Will PPM mean the end of AM radio?

PPM has recorded listeners tuning into an AM radio news station in Philadelphia on their HD radio. So, CBS Radio is now relaying sports talk AM station WFAN "The Fan" (660) on the WKRK 92.3's HD3 channel. This follows their move to place CBS AM all-news stations 880 WCBS and 1010 WINS on HD radio of WCBS-FM (101.1) and WWFS-FM (102.7).

Arbitron goes ahead with it's PPM rating system despite a warning from the office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo about using the Portable People Meter beginning tomorrow in eight new markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. He said Arbitron has engaged in “unlawful and deceptive acts and practices.” Their decision "is an affront to racial and ethnic minorities in New York and around the country." ...oh well

Meanwhile, Arbitron points to the success of PPM. Their press release leads off with WBLS and Steve Harvey tied for #1 in the morning in New York City. Arbitron also singles out regional Mexican format WOJO Chicago #1 in the morning, Spanish adult hits KLYY, Riverside, California #1 overall, and regional Mexican KSOL in San Francisco #7 overall.

Now back to HD radio? Well to the delight of radio broadcasters, Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced a bill that would require satellite and radio receiver manufacturers to make radios sold in the U.S. the ability to receive HD Radio signals. What does it all mean? HD radio might take out Sirius/XM satellite radio, but it will mean the death of static sounding AM radio.
