Rick Dees Back On the Air at Los Angeles' Hot 92.3 KHHT
This is like bringing in Regis Philbin to host Soul Train
Rick Dees is on the air in Los Angeles once again after leaving Movin’ 93.9 in April 2009. Before that Dees was a fixture at KIIS-FM from 1982 to 2004 until he was replaced by Ryan Seacrest. He returns to do the morning show on Clear Channel's rhythmic oldies “Hot 92.3” KHHT.
The station images itself now as "Old School" and has recently dropped the "and R&B" from its branding. But Hot 92.3 was essentially an Urban AC station not too long ago.
Hot 92.3 listeners are mostly Hispanic and African American, so the move to bring Rick Dees is a strange one indeed or simply a desperate attempt to get ratings. But Clear Channel market manager Greg Ashlock says "Rick is synonymous with radio in Los Angeles, and this genre of music is perfect for him, as he introduced many of these artists" to Southern California radio listeners.
Rick Dees claim to fame, besides over 30 years in radio, was this 1976 #1 song called "Disco Duck" from the then unknown Memphis, Tennessee DJ.
i was surprised to hear him say his name the other day, i wasn't a Rick Dees fan back in the day.
