95-5 WPGC America's Next Top Jock Winner Announced

...or in this case can we call it a "Tale of Two Cities," stations, or contests? "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…." as far as running a contest. (Taken from the Charles Dickens novel published 150 years ago)

From WPGC (now known as "95-5 DC's Hip Hop and R&B) -"The announcement was made Tuesday morning - Anji Corley is America's Next Top Jock and the new co-host of the Donnie Simpson Show! Bootsy Vegas ran a close second place and will be a part of the show as well, as the "Secretary of Swag" - (his first order of business: coming up with new Redskins songs for the DMV). Congratulations to both Anji and Bootsy -- and thanks to all of our contestants who did a great job on-air at the new AT&T WPGC Live Studio in Chinatown!"

Great job WPGC of promoting and getting media coverage on the morning show on FOX 5 WTTG TV. It helps that Donnie is a legend in D.C. Congrats to Anji, formerly of WAMO Pittsburgh, who earlier this summer was featured in Ebony Magazine as one of 2009's Super Sexy Singles.

Meanwhile in Philly at Power 99, their contest "Making the Morning Show" is bumbling along as mentioned last week. After a quintet of rotating host the first week of the contest, more host were added the following week. Most recently Power 99 night jock Golden Girl hosted for a couple of mornings and now this week we find Miss Jones AKA "Jonesy" AKA Tarsha Jones has been filling in.

Miss Jones told the Philadelphia Daily News "Power is the heritage station; it's the official station of Philly. After being on the wannabe station (her reference is to 100.3 The Beat WPHI), it would be good to be at a company that seems to respect family, womanhood and entertainment."

According to the article Power 99 says that a few hosts have been invited back to work a couple of more days and that no decision has been made about a permanent host. (Doesn't sound like the listeners have any say into who will be the next host as the contest suggest???) The Daily News is reporting that radio insiders say Jonesy may likely become the permanent host.

  1. "Miss Jones told the Philadelphia Daily News "Power is the heritage station;it's the official station of Philly.

Try telling that to the people from WDAS, which was the heritage station long before WUSL switched to black music in 1982, and in the eyes of many of the black power-players & brokers in Philly, WDAS-FM is STILL the heritage station !!!

"After being on the wannabe station (her reference is to 100.3 The Beat WPHI), it would be good to be at a company that seems to respect family, womanhood and entertainment."

Ask Wendy Williams about the "respect for family, womanhood and entertainment" at WUSL.

  2. P.S.

Listeners have NO say in anything dealing with radio. The best listeners can do is co-sign the crap they promote and program. I have actually heard on-air talent clown listeners on the air when they ask to hear songs that the jocks don't like or they feel shouldn't be requested based on their personal feelings, like one guy called and asked to hear a beyonce song, and they clowned him on the iar saying he wasn't a man for asking to hear that, that he needed to request some street rap [ i don't remember the artist or song, but you can tell what they were implying ].
