This Week it's Chubb Rock on 107.5 WBLS
More of "you pick the jock" contest news... Well this week Chubb Rock was added to the contest to pick the replacement for Wendy Williams on 107.5 WBLS in New York. Last week there were only three in the contest, now there's four! We wait patiently for the jock that will mysteriously appear next week. Maybe they should invite the contestants from the Power 99 and WPGC contest.
Anyway here's one of my favorite Chubb Rock video's "Just the Two of Us" featuring actress Elise Neal as one of the dancers before she became known for her acting skills in movies and TV. Maybe Elise Neal will sit in next week? Haven't seen her lately, who knows? (In this disappointingly blurry 1991 video, she's wearing the all black outfit in one segment and a red top in another part.) One question remains:
Can Chubb Rock play any of his songs on the Today's R&B and Classic Soul format at WBLS?

So if the perception is this: African American listeners of a certain age are turned off by rap (that includes "Old Skool" hip-hop), then why is WBLS attempting to appeal to their mature adult listeners with a contest for an on-air personality that includes Hip Hop artist like Salt 'n Pepa and Chubb Rock? Like Arsensio use to say, "Makes you go Hmmm..."
Chubb probably could. His latest single, "Another Party Joint", is simlar in style to a song that Baisden was playing by him a year or so ago with a "grown folks" vibe. I've heard WBLS play songs like "Luv U Better" by LL Cool J, and a few other raps that are considered safe.
ReplyDeletepeople chubb's age are the pimary wbls listener's now chubb is in his early 40's now people grew up with chubb rock songs even those in their 50's know the name chubb rock here in nyc, this is only showing hiphop is not a young persons music never has been really when you look at the pioneers of it, plus chubb is from the era when it wasn't a standard that u needed a parents music resource concil sticker on ur music for it to sell. The longtime myth that hiphop is a young persons music is just that and will continue to be dispelled, sales people are the ones who continue to say hiphop is a 12+ demo lol even the mickey mouse stuff that parades itself today as today's hiphop...those fans will also become older too.
ReplyDeleteY'all are killing me. So basically, Chubb was a good artist back in the day, has decent music TODAY, is in the 'demo', and produces 'safe' music....so this means he will be able to connect with the listening audience on WBLS and be a successful radio host?

I'll take the wheel and the drivers seat, cats like chubb rock are safe for wbls's bottom line. "profit aka money." it's not about talent anymore in radio it's about staying in business, if wbls could take basden away from kiss they would why? because they would beable to charge higher ad rates than with jeff foxx, bls is a older targeted station, people like chubb rock salt & peppa are in that demo now shocking to some, will playing it safe with them work? who knows, but if wbls see's they can get ad dollars they will try it, it's about making money and if u can condition ur demo/audience into excepting it then wbls will continue to marginally chug along. It's about staying above water that's all.
ReplyDeleteOK people...I didn't make myself clear. When I commented on Chubb Rock, it wasn't about his ability to host a radio show. I was responding to a question in the article that asked,"Can Chubb Rock play any of his songs on the Today's R&B and Classic Soul format at WBLS?", and I said that he could. My fault for not stating my position clearly.
