Program Director Jamillah Muhammad Fired from Majic 102.3

Jamillah Muhammad, the program director at Radio One's Majic 102.3, WMMJ, in Washington, D.C. has been released from her position. Muhammad, a Midwestern native had come aboard with a lot of fanfare a year and a half ago, after successful programming stints in Chicago and Detroit.

Majic 102.1 overhauled it's image and fired its entire airstaff including popular host Olivia Fox in the summer of '10 along with PD Kathy Brown. They also tweaked their playlist by playing newer R&B from the late '80's and '90's and leaving the true and tested classics from the 1970's and mid 1980's on the shelf. Muhammad was brought in to be in charge of this ship. Now rumors have surfaced that she decided go above corporate dictates concerning the music played on the station and the folks at Radio One were none too happy about it or the ratings. During her tenure veteran jocks Cortney Hicks, John Monds, and Adimu were hired to fill out the airstaff as well.

Could another overhaul be in the station's future?

In light of the less than stellar ratings of WMMJ, could Muhammad's firing also be a statement about the direction Urban AC stations need to take to reach a core demo that grew up on Hip Hop? It's a dilemma programmers have to face this decade for the Urban AC format.

  1. Jamillah Muhammed is one of the most professional people you could worth with or for. If she did go against the Radio One corporate grain...well I can't blame her.

As a current PD for Radio One, you get tired of shuffling the same 500 songs around in a format clock that allows very little room to keep your station from sounding stale. Ratings issues can no longer be blamed on PDs. If corporate controls what you can and cannot play WTF! It's a joke. Urban radio is a joke.

  2. Radio One is trying to make her look bad. I have worked for Jamillah Muhammad and we have always been on top. Her professionalism and knowledge is much better than the top management at Radio One. She's not the type to break the rules but she's not willing to kiss Jay Stevens ass either. That is probably what really happened. A failing company! Good luck Radio One secretaries... Oops! I mean PD's
