WNYC Radio Wins 4 NABJ 2011 Salute to Excellence National Media Awards
WNYC Radio has been recognized with four National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) 2011 Salute to Excellence Awards in the Radio Top 15 Market category. NABJ recognizes journalism that best covered the black experience or perspectives; the awards were announced last weekend at the Salute to Excellence Awards Gala at the NABJ Convention and Career Fair in Philadelphia.
WNYC won awards for the following radio pieces:
“Pop & Politics with Farai Chideya,” – Farai Chideya, Dean Cappello, Kerry Donahue, Suzie Lechtenberg
Radio, Documentary
A three-part public radio and multimedia news series about the 2010 midterm elections, produced by Pop & Politics and WNYC and distributed by American Public Media, that looks beyond the horserace to get to the real issues, fears and beliefs that motivate voters. Chideya and her team road-tripped through America to talk with Americans about their economic realities, regional concerns and national identity crises around religion, immigration, and race.
“Chlorine and Curls” – Jenna Flanagan

“Gamun-Pyul” – Radio Rookies: Rayon Wright, Sanda Hyte, Marianne McCune, Kaari Pitkin
Radio, Feature -Rookie Rayon Wright is a Jamaican-born teenager in love with Asian pop culture, who dreams of being a Korean music and entertainment producer. Radio Rookies is a WNYC youth journalism program that provides underserved New York City teenagers with the tools and training to create radio stories about themselves, their communities and their world.
“Gamun-Pyul” – Radio Rookies: Rayon Wright, Sanda Hyte, Marianne McCune, Kaari Pitkin
Radio, Feature -Rookie Rayon Wright is a Jamaican-born teenager in love with Asian pop culture, who dreams of being a Korean music and entertainment producer.
