93.5 The Flo Now Gives the Inland Empire a Taste of Old School from KDAY
Rhythmic Oldies station "The Flo 93.5" (KWIE-FM) Riverside-San Bernardino has dropped its format and will now simulcast its sister station's Urban/Old School Hip Hop format from KDAY-FM in Los Angeles.KDAY dropped its Hip-Hop and R&B format and the name "The Beat" along with Steve Harvey, Michael Baisden and Keith Sweat (Wendy Williams and Mo'Nique were also a part of their line-up) in August for "deep musical roots" without syndicated programming. Not sure what that means... isn't it just "Back in the Day" Jams all day long? You can sample their format here.
"Los Angeles has been missing the west coast sound. By eliminating syndicated programming, KDAY can now focus on its strengths as a local, independent station that connects with the diverse culture that is Los Angeles. With a mix of the old school and the new music that is enjoyed today, I feel we have a unique and winning recipe," said said OM/PD Adrian "A.D." Scott.
KDAY's effort to created an adult format that's quite different from the rest can be applauded. Their commitment to local music programming is commendable also. However old school hip hop is a format that will get listeners excited in the short run, but that "WOW" factor has no staying power. Is there anything such as old head Bloods and Crips that will consistently tune in?
There's just so much Snoop, Biggie, Tupac, Dr. Dre or Cypress Hill you can listen to without going a little _________. Another format change for KDAY in 2010 is hardly a stretch of the imagination...
