WAMO 100.1 is Pittsburgh's New, "OLD" Home for Hip Hop and R&B

Is Urban radio really back in Pittsburgh?

We drove all around the city and only picked up about 90% static -Boring Pittsburgh.com

We are a little surprised that the owners of the station, San Francisco-based Radio Power Inc., is going with an urban (rolling 10,000 commercial-free joints in a row), rather than an urban adult contemporary format. With the success of native son Wiz Khalifa, the hip hop community in Pittsburgh is pretty much established without the need to promote itself on terrestrial radio and would be hard pressed to find the new "Wham-O." Besides, simulcasting a daytime only AM radio signal on a sketchy FM translator seems to make much more sense with a Classic Soul and R&B format. The station will be fully operational by June. You can follow on twitter @WAMO100.

Here's the report from BoringPittsburgh.com
-On Saturday, May 21, instead of getting raptured, Pittsburgh got a new radio station using the same letters as WAMO, but on a different frequency. No longer 106.7 FM, the new channel is located at 100.1 FM.

The last time Pittsburgh had a radio station dedicated to playing 24/7 hip-hop and R&B was on September 8, 2009. It was on that day, at 6:07pm, when WAMO went off-air to be replaced by a gospel station [Catholic programming]. WAMO dominated the radio waves in the Burgh for 50 years! Hard to believe that Wiz Khalifa really blew up exactly at the time when his home town didn’t have a rap station to play his songs. But then again, let’s not forget his DJ hails from 96.1 Kiss FM, so he got plenty of attention there."

  2. Hi WAMO, So nice to say that, I know it takes time to get programing that the fans want. So with that let me tell you what I would like to hear. NO STEVE HARVEY!!! Would like to hear some news that goes on in the city of Pgh. like August Wilson events and meetings that are going on about our black people with the purpose of improving our lives while listening to hip hop, jazz or gospel. Giving health tips to making our mind and bodies be health. It need not take up the day, but am sure you can find a spot for this. Will continue to voice what I would love to hear on WAMO and give praise to you for taking on the challenge. Love L.M.

  4. Initially I wasn't a big fan of WAMO when I first moved here, then after the sell I was distraught about not having a real Urban Radio Station to listen to. Now that WAMO is back I am just as disappointed with the station as I was before. Maybe even more now than ever. It feels as if I am listening to a pop radio station. Which is a lot of what is already here in the area. So now I am forced to listen to only 90.5, maybe after a while something will change and some real good R&B music will come on the airwaves!

  7. Very disappointed at the fact you call this wamo more like another 96.1 I hate it to be an urban station is really such a major let down. Hence y the viewer ratings would be low.
