Cult Classic Novel “True To The Game” Opens in Theaters Friday, September 8
The wait is finally over for the big screen adaptation of New York Times Best Selling author Teri Woods’ cult classic novel True To the Game. After selling more than two million copies worldwide, the much-anticipated film version of the gritty drama premiers nationwide in theaters this Friday.
“True To The Game” is an action-packed urban love story starring Erica Peeples as Gena Rollins, a young Philly native transplanted to the hardcore streets of Harlem, where she ends up meeting a slick, smooth talker named Quadir Richards played by Columbus Short. Quadir is a high-rolling hustler who introduces Gena to the street life. Young and in love, the inseparable pair finds themselves tangled up in the vicious yet seductive web of drugs, money and guns.
Directed by Preston A. Whitmore II (“This Christmas,” “Doing Hard Time”), written by Nia Hill (“Colored My Mind: The Diagnosis,” “Sunday Best”) and also starring Andra Fuller (“The L.A. Complex,” “Black Jesus”), Vivica A. Fox as Shoog and Nelsan Ellis (in his final film role), the film’s executive producer Manny Halley, CEO of Imani Entertainment Group, acquired rights for the motion picture in 2008, along with plans to produce and bring another one of Woods’ bestselling novels Dutch to the big screen as well.
“‘True To the Game’ and ‘Dutch’ are pioneering bodies of work that have solidified their place in the history books,” Halley said in a statement. “Fans worldwide have been awaiting the creation of films for both books for a very long time, and we’re thrilled to bring them to life… To date, both novels have sold millions worldwide, and the timeless stories are very relevant still today.”
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native Teri Woods finished writing “True to the Game” in 1992 while working at a law firm in Philadelphia. The successful, self-published pioneer of the urban fiction genre aimed her writing at an African-American demographic largely ignored by major publishers.
She spent six years submitting the novel to several publishers, all of which rejected her. In 1998, Woods had copies of the book printed herself and began to sell copies to booksellers in and around the Philadelphia area and, eventually, across the United States. She eventually started Teri Woods Publishing, a self-publishing house to distribute her work and that of others, principally in the urban fiction genre. Woods’ success allowed her to negotiate a multimillion-dollar contract with Hachette Book Group USA to re-release her previously published novels.
In 2015, it was announced that True to the Game was being produced into a film of the same name.
