Judge Gives Urban AC Radio Station Six More Months to Operate at 1140 AM

Robert Womack leads a protest march to save WJNZ and has gotten support from Gospel singer Marvin Sapp and his wife

"This is a bigger picture," said MaLinda Sapp, who sat in a Kent County Courthouse hearing Friday to block the station's sale. "It's not financially-driven, it's community-driven. (The radio station) serves a purpose and exposes issues that are important to our community. We are here because we want to maintain this as part of the African American community. We are not exclusive (but) if you eradicate this station, we won't have a voice."

Now here's the latest: 1140 WJNZ Grand Rapids, Michigan personality and would-be owner Robert S. Womack had tried to halt the $310,000 bankruptcy sale of WJNZ to the lay-Catholic Holy Family Radio, and did prevent it from going to closing as originally scheduled. He claims the bidding process was flawed and says he wants to buy the station, and has the backing to do it.

Now the Grand Rapids Press newspaper reports that a judge has given Womack six more months to operate WJNZ at 1140, before Holy Family can consummate its purchase. Womack even has the right to take the WJNZ call letters with him to a new station – and there are indications that local owner Goodrich may be involved. All Womack says is that “we have found another signal that we will be able to broadcast from if we do take this settlement." Source Grand Rapids Press and Radio-Info
