KROV Community Radio Goes On the Air

San Antonio African American community again will have a voice on local airwaves

...KROV, for “Restore Our Voice,” traces its roots directly to the sale of KSJL Radio in 2007 by the Sutton family, prominent African American business leaders. It turned the city's only black station into a Christian music station.

At 6 p.m. Sunday[Feb. 27], San Antonio's newest radio station, KROV 91.7-HD2 FM, will go on the air.

Hearing its call letters over the airwaves for the first time will be an emotional moment for the city's African American community and supporters who've longed for a point on the radio dial to call their own.

The 24-hour, noncommercial, urban-contemporary HD station will join about 20 others in San Antonio requiring a hybrid digital radio.

Its musical format will consist of “timeless R&B hits” as well as gospel, jazz, hip-hop and San Antonio-produced music of all genres, from Sunny Ozuna to the Rick Cavender Band, said General Manager Tommy Calvert Jr. “If you're broadcast material, I'll play it,” he said.

The station's demographics will skew 35-plus and toward the kind of listeners Calvert said are struggling to find something to listen to on the radio.
In promotional material, KROV promises to “get our city's groove back.”
