A Top 20 Black Radio Disc Jockey of All Time List from NewsOne

The news website NewsOne list their Top 20 Radio Disc Jockeys of all time. The list is not a comprehensive one. But they are entitled to their opinion.

Despite regional favorites around the country, for our money the most influential DJ's in the history of Black Radio are Frankie Crocker and Doug "Jocko" Henderson. Both made their mark in radio in New York City radio. No doubt Frankie's on air delivery nurtured in Buffalo, NY; along with his programming style, influenced generations of radio broadcasters for over three decades.

Jocko's on-air rhyming style on Philadelphia and New York radio in the 1950's and 60's arguably was the forerunner to rap music/Hip Hop that emerged from the streets of NYC in the early 1970's. He is featured in the video below.

The NewsOne website is owned by Radio One and the mention of some of their current on-air personalties is expected, but there are some oversights...and quite frankly the list is a little suspect when there's not a mention of Herb Kent or Donnie Simpson in their top 20. Here's their list. What do you think?

  1. It's a very suspicious list, indeed. Radio One does seem to omit the likes of Donnie Simpson, but he "left them" for WPGC when he was hot. I guess that is their way of getting him back for betrayal.
