Marc Lamont Hill - Hosting VH1 Live Is Not Beneath Me

It's OK to Talk About the "Fun Stuff" and Reach New Audiences

(The Huff Post) “VH1 Live,” which premiered earlier this month, tackles the latest entertainment news with appearances from some of VH1’s biggest stars. While Hill is known for his opinionated CNN commentary, unapologetic takes on racial issues and role as a professor at Morehouse College ― the show gives him the chance to cover lighter topics, he told The Huffington Post’s Jacques Morel on Monday.

“[We wanted to] make a show where we can talk about issues, but talk about the fun stuff,” Hill said.

Hill also responded to critiques of the show that have claimed it might be “ratchet,” or too lowbrow.
“Ratchet to me is an elitist and classist word and often it is undercut by other things around race,” he told HuffPost. “I think there’s space to talk about people who don't sip tea with their pinky up, ...

After watching last Sunday's (July 31st) program we sent a tweet out to Marc Lamont Hill. Like many who know of Hill's socially conscience commentary and his political views; (A noted author, a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, a professor at Morehouse, and now talking Love and Hip Hop and Basketball Wives???) sitting on a couch with Stevie J and Shaunie didn't add up. Then we had an epiphany, a revelation, insight to what this show could become.



In the following interview from The Breakfast Club, host Charlamagne said he thought the show was beneath him.



Hill has been making the media rounds promoting his new book and his hosting gig on VH1 Live.
