WURD Radio Welcomes Dee Patel As Its New Director of Programming and News

WURD Radio welcomes media and broadcast veteran Dee Patel as its new Director of Programming and News.

Patel has served in the Philadelphia broadcast region for 20 years. She was the news director of KYW Newsradio for over a decade where she also held a variety of positions at KYW Newsradio, including Executive Producer of the groundbreaking, Emmy-nominated television headline newscast, “KYW This Morning” on UPN 57″ and writer for CBS 3 Eyewitness News.  She served as evening news editor and reporter.

“What appealed to me about the opportunity to join WURD is the extraordinary way the station serves the community,” said Patel. With over two decades of radio, television, and multimedia experience, she looks forward to bringing her expertise in robust content development to WURD.

Most recently, Patel comes to WURD from the academic world of the University of Pennsylvania where she was part of the team of Office of University Communications. Prior to that, Patel was part of Temple University’s journalism capstone coursework, PhiladelphiaNeighborhoods.com, where she produced original, multimedia reporting focused on stories in under-served communities and offering mentorship to students enrolled in the journalism department’s capstone course.

Patel began her broadcast journalism career at radio station WBCB in Levittown (Bucks County), Pa. There she worked as assistant news director and later news director, gaining a wealth of experience by anchoring, reporting and managing. While there, she also wrote a weekly column for the “Intelligencer” newspaper in Doylestown, covering events and nightlife in New Hope, PA. She also worked on the air at NJN Public Radio as a weekend anchor.

Patel grew up in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs, attending Pennsbury High School, where she remains very involved with her alma mater. She serves on the school’s scholarship committee, having been one of the recipients herself when she graduated. Patel has an MA degree from Temple University in Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, and Theatre.
