WDAS FM Celebrates 30 years of Unity
WDAS FM in Philadelphia will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of "Unity Day". The event this year has now become a Unity Weekend on the Delaware River waterfront in the city. Unity Weekend will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 and Sunday, August 24, 2008. The event now is more of a concert over two days rather than a community gathering that took place on a Sunday afternoon on the Parkway near the steps of the famous Art Museum.
An estimated 1 million people show up for Unity Day each year
The spirit of the event now controlled by Clear Channel has definitely changed. As noted on their website: This is a smaller concert venue. This is not a facility to plan to have a family BBQ and or picnic at.
The first 'Unity Day' picnic on July 16, 1978 was not held on city property as the city wouldn't grant the station a permit. The station held the event at parks in West Philly where 10,000 people showed up.
