Reggie Bryant Left Speechless by Tribute

More than 400 friends, colleagues and fans came out to give tribute, “Giving the Doctor His Roses”, to talk show host Reggie Bryant. Bryant, talk show host on 900 AM WURD radio entered the sold out H&H Community Development Center in the Germantown section of Philadelphia with applause and chants of “Reggie, Reggie, Reggie.”

Bryant known on the air by his many listeners and regular callers to his program as "The Doctor", has faced some health challenges in recent years and a group simply known as The Friends of Reggie Bryant hosted a Testimonial Tribute to Bryant.

Bryant has had a 30 plus year radio career and in addition pioneered from 1973-1978, the television interview program, “Black Perspective on the News.” The news program on PBS was a journalistic first that reached 170 stations. Gwen Ifill a former NBC reporter and current PBS host and moderator launched her television career from early appearances on the landmark show.

The tribute, broadcast live on WURD radio, included many in the field of newspaper, television and radio, but the most surprising tribute came from noted radio journalist, Mumia Abu-Jamal. The internationally known political prisoner and controversial figure sent an audio message from death row, (where he has been for the last 28 years) praising Reggie Bryant’s legacy.

More on the tribute as covered by the Philadelphia Tribune.
