There’s always a purpose to any Tom Joyner initiative, with a celebration for the people participating and commitment! Top musical performers, popular comedians and special celebrity guests will make a stop in Philadelphia October 19-20 to support and celebrate the award-winning radio personality’s year-long Take A Loved One to the Doctor (TALOTTD) campaign and two-day health festival. Held at the city’s Liacouras Center, this premier event will feature health screenings, exclusive musical appearances by R&B singer from New Edition Johnny Gill, a comedy show with J. Anthony Brown, Dominique and Rodney Perry for health festival attendees only, and a host of other celebrities and experts. Radio station WRNB-FM 100.3 which broadcasts The Tom Joyner Morning Show, will host the event in Philadelphia along with Hot 107.9 and Praise 103.9.
This year’s signature event kicks off Friday, October 19th at 6 a.m. with a live broadcast of Joyner’s nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show®. Heard on more than 105 stations nationwide, the broadcast will feature Joyner’s entire cast, as well as live performances by Johnny Gill and Vashawn Mitchell. Following the broadcast, Joyner’s FREE to the public health festival will open from 9 a.m. -7p.m. (both Friday and Saturday) screenings, health care providers with services -totaling more than $1000 in value -featured seminars, demonstrations, numerous exhibitors and appearances by celebrity guests and health field experts Dr. Ian Smith, US Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., Dr. Ro (Rovenia Brock), Les Brown, David and Tamala Mann, and actress/fitness expert AJ Johnson. Philadelphia Mayor Nutter and Pennsylvania State Sen. Hughes will actively be involved. BET's TJ Holmes will host a seminar on the state of Black Health.
Developed in 2002 to raise preventive health awa thousand and eight and reness in the African American community, TALOTTD has grown from one day into a full-fledged initiative that impacts more than eight million listeners weekly. The year-long health awareness campaign is heavily promoted through Joyner’s “Get Well Wednesdays” feature.
According to Dr. Ian Smith, "African Americans have arrived unceremoniously at the most critical health crossroads in our history. It's incumbent upon all of us to be proactive and generous in the spreading of information and increasing access. Doctor Day and the national buzz it generates are an important part of the solution in that they raise necessary awareness about a health crisis in this country that can have a profoundly detrimental effect on our very lives and those of future generations."

On Friday evening, Joyner will keep attendees entertained from 7-10 p.m. with an “Old School” Basement After Party. In addition to rapper Chubb Rock, Monie Love, Kwame and Special Ed are scheduled to perform. The partying and purpose continues well into Saturday evening when J. Anthony Brown hosts “Laughter is the Best Medicine” Comedy Jam featuring Rodney Perry, Dominique and Damon Williams. Tickets to this exclusive comedy performance will only be given to guests who stop by the health festival either Friday or Saturday and pick up a “party pass” that’s good for two tickets to the show.
