Atlanta Has Another R&B Station, New Format Launches on Star 94 The Rhythm of ATL
Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company and one of the two largest radio broadcasters in the U.S., today announced the relaunch of The New Star 94, the rhythm of Atlanta, effective immediately. The upbeat station will be home to Atlanta’s largest music library, delivering a unique blend of expertly curated music from artists like Prince, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and more.
Listeners will enjoy more variety and unpredictability as part of their listening experience, including surprise moments and tunes that have been missing from ATL’s airwaves.
“The New Star 94 will bring the rhythm of Atlanta to life and capture the vibe of the metro area,” said Rick Caffey, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Entercom Atlanta. “In these difficult times, radio serves as a platform to both entertain and inform. We look forward to growing the well-established Star brand into a place for our audience to feel good through top hits from their favorite artists.”
Technically the station is categorized as “Rhythmic Adult Contemporary,” but Entercom's Radio.com app lists the station in the genre of Adult R&B with similarly programmed stations like 94.7 The Wave, The Soul of Southern California, based in Los Angeles. Star 94.7 is targeting the mainstream (white) females in the 25-54 demo. The station essentially sounds like the Jammin' Oldies of the 90's and early 2000's.
The station launched with Michael Jackson “Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'”, Notorious B.I.G.'s “'Mo Money, Mo Problems,” Eve’s “Let Me Blow Ya Mind," and Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” The station has been around since the 80's and until now avoided playing any Hip Hop or Rhythmic during its existence. The station's research team suggests their audience's taste has changed over the years. These are the songs are now Pop hits of today. Listening to the station today, Star 94 also favors Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Justin Timberlake. (And for some reason that dance anthem from 1990, Snap's "I Got the Power" made it onto their playlist. The station is appealing to the upper end of that 25-54 demo with that one.)
Atlanta now features ten stations on FM radio featuring Black artists along with Star 94. Sister station WVEE V-103, Kiss 104.1, Majic 107.5/97.5, Hot 107.9, Streetz 94.5, OG 97.9, Classix 102.9, Clark Atlanta University's Jazz 91.9 WCLK, and Praise 102.5.
