Is The Breakfast Club Great Radio or Great YouTube Content? Rory and Rosenberg Debate on Validate Me
Rosenberg has a new podcast called Validate Me. He is still going strong with his WWE work, afternoons on 880 ESPN New York, and the Ebro Laura Rosenberg daily morning show podcast. Validate Me can be described as a very safe place to work out your stuff, even though it's on the internet. Rosenberg's guest this week is Rory of the 'Rory and Mal' podcast. They were former podcast partners with Joe Budden.
They sit down for an honest discussion about validation, public criticism, podcasting, fame, race, ego, and what it means to build a career while thousands of people have an opinion about your life. In the midst of their conversation, the topic of The Breakfast Club comes up. That show represented competition in New York morning radio in the 2010's during the time Rosenberg was at Hot 97.
Rory calls it the greatest morning radio ever. Rosenberg sees it differently. He admits it changed the game, but as far as radio shows go, he sees it more like YouTube content that is airing back to him on the radio. Perhaps The Breakfast Club's greatest strength was capitalizing on the internet's rise, publishing content online years before going into syndication.
During their discussion, they reference the morning show on Hot 97 featuring Cipha Sounds, Rosenberg, and K. Foxx in 2013 when Ebro was the program director. Rory referenced the morning show that ran on Hot previously. That show was Big Boy's Neighborhood from Emmis owned sister station Power 106 in Los Angeles. Power 105.1 had launched The Breakfast Club with Angela Yee, DJ Envy, and Charlamagne Tha God in 2010. It is safe to say that The Breakfast Club didn't become a cultural phenomenon in Hip Hop until they started posting their content on YouTube.
Here's a fascinating and captivating interview with Kanye West from 2013. Rory has a point... great questions for Kanye. But Rosenberg, as a radio nerd, has a point also. (Somebody put out an APB for this Kanye, not Ye, but Kanye...)
