'War of the Roses' Pranks have become BIG Radio Ratings Winner

The radio equivalent to the TV show "Cheaters" has been a ratings winner for many radio stations across the country. The hugely popular prank segment, whose name came from the 1989 movie of the same name, has been around for almost 20 years and was created in early 1994 by Los Angeles radio personality Rick Dees shortly after receiving word that crosstown KGGI Riverside/San Bernadino morning show host Sean "Hollywood" Hamilton was having tremendous rating success with a similar feature called "Bait Your Mate."

For some reason it's become MORE popular in radio today. That same Hollywood Hamilton has engineered that early success into the number one rated afternoon show in New York City at 103.5 FM 'KTU. According to David Hinckley of the New York Daily News, Hamilton’s 5 p.m. hour has consistently had the city’s [New York City Tristate area] highest share on afternoon radio. “It’s the most popular segment I’ve done in my 30 years on the radio,” says Hamilton. “People tell me all the time that even if they don’t listen to the radio regularly, they tune in for this.”

Chances are your town's CHR or Top 40 radio station has a morning or afternoon show with a "War of the Roses" segment. Check out a collection of those segments below.
