Dr. Maya Angelou Gives Thought Provoking Perspective On The Middle East

Jacque Reid Goes Inside Her Story with Dr. Maya Angelou

Dr. Maya Angelou Gives Thought Provoking Perspective On The Middle East and Support for President Obama on the Tom Joyner Morning Show

“People act as if they don’t understand why the Arabs are so angry because the film was made to insult Allah and Muhammad; can you imagine if a film was made insulting Jesus Christ and suggesting he committed all sorts of vulgarities?”

LISTEN to the interview from BlackAmericaWeb.com-- Dr. Maya Angelou was interviewed by Jacque Reid on the Tom Joyner Morning Show where she shared thought provoking perspective on the state of racism in America today, African Americans voting, and what’s happening in the Middle East.

Jacque Reid asked :

Are you surprised so many African American Democrats have been so critical of President Obama when it comes to things like racism and poverty? Does that surprise you or disappoint you?

Maya Angelou responded:

It disappoints me because we’ve been fighting racism since 1619,that we know of, how you can expect one black man without complete support to eradicate racism when it is still alive and very unwell now as it was in 1812...

…and how the black people could expect President Obama in four years to undo what has taken 300 years plus to achieve is outrageous.

What we need to do is vote. We need to register and vote. I learned that over 400,000 black people in my state (North Carolina) are not registered to vote. We should be ashamed of that. If you have to vote for someone else at least vote; but I encourage people to vote for President Obama.

When the interview was wrapping up Dr. Angelou requested to make one more statement:

People act as if they don’t understand why the Arabs are so angry because the film was made to insult Allah and Muhammad; can you imagine if a film was made insulting Jesus Christ and suggesting he committed all sorts of vulgarities?

That doesn’t excuse anybody but at least when you do look at it I put more energy on trying to help the people understand that you were not a part of it, that you do not vulgarize anybody’s religion. That as an American this country was supposed to be free to all people of every religion and every religion would be respected.

Realize we are all human beings and all human beings are more equal to each other than they are unequal.

You know I had to preach a little bit!
