Ebony Steele Talks to 'Hello Beautiful' About Surviving Breast Cancer
Ebony Steele, the female voice of reason of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show had an unexpected turning point in her career. In 2007, as she was preparing to start her new role with Rickey Smiley, she discovered a lump in her breast. That lump ended up being diagnosed as Stage 1 breast cancer. One devastating doctor’s appointment, surgery and four months of chemotherapy later, Ebony has been able to call herself a survivor.
She’s joined the Susan G. Komen Foundation as a National Ambassador and has even launched her own campaign, #SteeleSurviving, which was created to foster a community of sisterhood, encouraging breast cancer survivors to utilize their social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to share personal stories of strength and healing to not only uplift, but to educate each other.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and no one wants to be that one. Ebony never dreamed it would be her, but she didn’t let the diagnosis stop her life. She knew that her purpose was more than just being the funny woman alongside Rickey Smiley. “I had an opportunity to either be quiet about it, or share that story,” Ebony explained. She used her devastating diagnosis to inspire other women who have or are facing the same fate to not take Breast Cancer as a death sentence.
As a part of Susan G. Komen’s Circle Of Promise, Ebony raises awareness of breast cancer and encourages other Black women to fight against the disease. Check out her personal story of survival.
