Today (August 23) is a very special anniversary for me. It was on this day 40 years ago, 1977, that I started on the radio in Washington DC.
I was 23 years old and moved here after 8 years on WJLB in my hometown Detroit. I came with my wife of 4 years, Pam, and our 3 year old son, Donnie Jr., or DJ.
That first day I was very scared because I felt I had built in advantages in Detroit. I was a homeboy and they had watched me grow up on the air there from the time I was 15. Here they didn’t know me and I wasn’t sure they would like me.
The radio station was WKYS—Disco 93. It was owned by NBC and we were in the same building as it’s TV operations. The first song I played was “Boogie Nights” by Heatwave and it blew my mind. I knew the song of course, but WJLB was an AM station and I had never heard music in stereo while I was on the air. When I introduced myself over the first 16 seconds of that song and those background voices, eerily singing, “Boogie nights oh oh oh”, came into my headphones in full stereo, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I couldn’t believe how good it sounded. I thought, this must be what it’s like to hear with Stevie Wonder’s ears. It sounded so good my ears needed a cigarette.
