TV One and Charter Communications Announce Winner of the “Empowerment Through Literacy” Challenge

Boone High School in Orlando awarded $1,000 prize in special ceremony held August 22

TV One and Charter Communications announced Boone High School in Orlando as the inaugural winner of the “Empowerment Through Literacy” Video Challenge. Combining the themes #AWorldWithout, TV One’s current marketing campaign and “Empowerment Through Literacy,” from Charter, this contest is a resource to help students overcome bridges and barriers to digital literacy and inclusion.

For the “Empowerment Through Literacy” video challenge, students were asked to submit a one-minute video entry identifying an African American, past or present, who has made a positive difference or accomplishment. The winning entry came from Adam Jackson and Cassandra LaPlante, students at Boone High School in Orlando, who created a three minute video honoring Officer Kenneth Pinkston of the Orlando Police Department. The students won $1000 for their class and were presented with their prize in a special ceremony on August 22. The Central Florida Urban League also served as a presenting partner for the contest.

The project-based curriculum, designed for students in grades 7-12, offers production-related lessons tied to News One Now, TV One’s morning news show, hosted by award-winning journalist Roland S. Martin. TV One’s STEAM program integrates the arts into the more widely recognized national efforts aimed at increasing minority representation in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by exposing youth to the varied aspects of the entertainment industry.

TV One’s STEAM program provides an innovative platform for engaging students by demonstrating the interconnectedness of science and art in the media and entertainment industry. The highly-developed "Lights, Camera, Career" curriculum aligns with many state and federal educational standards and aims not only to engage students but impact communities. TV One STEAM is a part of a larger community investment effort inherent in TV One’s business and corporate responsibility strategy.
