Another Station Flips and Chooses Hip Hop, This time in the Carolina - Virginia Area
VARTV reports on the the format change of WKJX/96.7 Elizabeth City, North Carolina to a Hip-Hop format. The station had been a soft rock AC for almost six years.
WKJX played all types of music and comedy bits including a loop of Bill Cosby comedy routines leaving listeners wondering about the new station in town. Then the voiceover guy said "Lets do it...", (must have been Tone Loc) and the first song on "The Block" was Timberland's (featuring Drake) "Say Something." For now, The Block is "rolling" commercial-free. Source: VARTV
The station is a 50,000 watt FM station that reaches well into the Virginia Beach, Virginia area.
Could Hip Hop radio be making a comeback? Last month another soft rock station in Charleston, SC flipped to a urban hip hop station as 92-5 The Box.
