Harrisburg Radio Station Drops "The Touch" R&B Format and the Tom Joyner Morning Show
“Yes, The Touch has played an important role for the past 18 years in the local African-American community, and that aspect will unfortunately be lost with this change,” Giovanniello said in an email to The Patriot-News on Monday. “In the end, The Touch was/is a business ... and like any business, it cannot survive without the support of enough customers, in this case advertisers and sponsors.”
Today is the last day that listeners in Harrisburg, PA can listen to The Touch. The above the message is posted on the station's website. The station will also cease to carry the Tom Joyner Morning Show and The Doug Banks Show as well.
The station is going with ESPN radio on the 1400 AM signal which was simulcasted on a FM translator at 95.3 FM. The Touch is a syndicated format that features an Urban AC/Classic Soul/ Today's R&B format. Could the problem be that local advertisers were not that enthusiastic about supporting a station with virtually no local programming?
-(The Patriot News) Harrisburg’s rhythm-and-blues lovers are about to lose their Touch, but 95.3 FM’s impending format switch will also leave a hole in the local African-American community’s information pipeline.
WTCY-FM, better known as The Touch, will switch to ESPN Radio’s all-sports format starting Thursday, ending a nearly two-decade run of playing classic and contemporary R&B hits and delivering syndicated national personalities such as Tom Joyner and Doug Banks.
The station where listeners tuned to hear Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston will offer “Mike and Mike in the Morning,” ESPN’s nationally broadcast sports talk show.
